Hello everyone! My name is Jason (31 years old/male) and I'm an English teacher from America. I have lived in Taipei for about 6 months. I am looking for an experienced Chinese tutor to help me with my spoken Chinese and listening skills. I previously took one Chinese class in America 2 years ago and currently have a tutor (but am unhappy with their performance). While I can understand a fair amount of Chinese and can accomplish many day to day tasks, I still suffer from the same problems as most foreigners - awkward grammar, word choice and poor pronunciation at times.
I need a teacher who has demonstrated experience teaching Chinese to foreigners and can deliver a structured curriculum with well planned lessons and listening/speaking drills. I expect to be assigned thoughtful homework assignments. You should be FLUENT in Hanyu pinyin and able to explain grammar questions quickly and efficiently. "I don't know how to explain this exactly...let me think about it and we'll talk about it next time" is not an acceptable answer. It should go without saying that your English should be at an advanced level. I am looking for two times a week (total 4 -5 hours per week) in the late mornings/early afternoons on weekdays (I typically work in the late afternoons/evenings). I'm flexible on the days as long as they're reasonable spaced. I would like to meet at the cafe across from my house in Gongguan.
While I am friendly and (I think) fun to work with, I am also a serious student and I expect a serious teacher. I am currently working out of Practical Chinese Vol 2 although I am open to using different materials if you have a compelling reason. If you are interested in helping me improve my Chinese, please tell me a little bit about your experience, teaching successes and the student you have worked with the longest/helped to improve the most. Please make sure to tell me about your teaching style/methods. Please also be up front about your rate.
Happy New Year!
