March 2004 Dear Director, My name is Tania Daley. I am a Canadian citizen and I've recently graduated from the Global TESOL College in Toronto with an Advanced Certificate in teaching TESOL, and a specialization in teaching children. I also have a College Diploma in Broadcast Journalism, and studied Political Science in University. I find Taiwan?s history, language, and overall culture to be quite unique. I was born in the bilingual French-Canadian province of Quebec and although we are part of Canada, our culture and language is distinctly different from our neighbours. It is for these reasons and others, that I have a special connection to the Republic of China. I have first-hand experience of the difficulties and successes one experiences when trying to learn a second language. My mother tongue is English, yet I was privileged to learn French at an early age. I look forward to learning Mandarin for my personal growth and as a means to better connect to my students. I have acquired years of teaching experience through a variety of employment opportunities. I am a professional broadcast journalist known as ?True Daley? and have worked in television and radio for over ten years. I am also a freelance writer for both national and local publications. My journalism education has given me an advanced knowledge of my mother tongue and has introduced me to aspects of the language that are commonly overlooked. I am able to identify and teach standard North American pronunciation, intonation, natural pauses between phrases, story writing, and how to convey emotion. I find acquiring these skills are imperative when learning to speak English effectively and naturally. I believe my character, personality and talents will make me one of the best ESL teachers at your institution. I have always been a creative person whose artistic talents include; performance poetry, acting, singing, and dance. I look forward to catching a performance by the Tapei Folk Dance Troupe! I have been performing and speaking to the public since I was a child and I?ve been invited to numerous schools, community organizations, and theatre productions.
