＊Established in 1968, Taipei Physical Education College was originally named Taipei Municipal Junior College of Physical Education, which offered five-year and two-year study programs. Mr. Hon-tan Lin, the first president of the college, laid a sound foundation for the school. He retired in February 1977. The college is scheduled to move to the new Tien-mu campus in two years. ＊Due to the country's rapid development of industries, former Minister of Economic Affairs, Mr. Li Guo-Ding, called upon private and state-own corporations to join in the funding of a higher education institution in the Hsin-Chu and Miao-Li areas in June 1969, with the objective of developing a middle-level technical workforce. A site was chosen in the Miao-Li region, where there was a shortage of higher education institutions at the time. The Board of Directors was set up, and Mr. Jin Kai-Ying was invited to take up the position of the Chairman of the Board. To lead the development of higher education, the Institute continued to serve the public with a strong foundation in science, technology, and business administration as well as planning for future expansion. ＊On July 1st,1999,the National Fu Hsing Dramatic Arts Academy combined with the National Kuo Kuang Academy of Arts to establish the National Taiwan Junior College of Performing Arts（NTJCPA）. It is the first vocational school of its kind in Taiwan to offer ten years of continual education in the performing arts. As NTJCPA was formed from two preexisting schools, it is now separated into two campuses: the Mucha Campus, and the Neihu Campus. NTJCPA is engaging in whole person arts education, and cultivating accomplishments in the humanities, with an equal emphasis on both professional skills and academic theory. Furthermore, the school mission is to develop creative talent, with the hope that students can bear the burden of passing down cultural heritage to the next generation, and fostering the tradition of Chinese performing arts. Currently, NTJCPA facilities include a Chinese Opera Cultural Relic Exhibition Hall, three performance theatres, and two experimental theatres. The school ha also published a series of books about the performing arts profession, and produced a multi-media presentation that introduces plays and cultural relics. ＊Leader University was established in 2000 under the leadership of a board of trustees consisting of leading Taiwanese businessmen and legislators, with the aim of promoting and improving higher education in southern Taiwan. Departments within Leader University are currently organized into five colleges: the College of Management, the College of Languages, the College of Information, the College of Environmental Planning, and the College of Leisure Management. ＊As founder and former Chairman S. C. Lin was aware that talented people are the most important asset of a business, he wound up his individual business in 1942 and donated his own property to establish Tatung Schools-Company. The founder reserved 10% of his property for his family, and donated 10% to all the Tatung colleagues so that they were able to become employee shareholders. The remaining 80% were donated to the Hsieh-Chih Association for Industry Development, which established Tatung Senior High School and Tatung University. These two schools and Tatung Company, a leading electric and electronic company in Taiwan with annual sales of 6 billion US dollars and 36,000 employees world wide, form the Tatung Schools-Company, a unique education-industry-integration program in the world. Dr. T. S. Lin was then appointed Professor-President-Chairman of the Schools-Company. In 1956 Tatung Institute of Technology was formally established and began to offer two-year programs. The Institute was accredited as a four-year institute of technology in 1963. To meet the needs of the rapid economic development and the ever-increasing demands for highly qualified professionals, the Institute began to offer master programs in 1976, and doctorate programs in 1982. In 1986, “Shu-Te Institute of Technology” was founded in Yen Chau, Kaohsiung. The Institute offered four undergraduate programs in 1997: Information Management, Business Administration, Applied Foreign Languages, and Interior Design. In 1998, another four programs were added: Insurance & Finance, Visual Communication Design, Fashion Design, and Early Childhood Care & Education. ＊National Pingtung University of Education (NPUE) is located in Pingtung, the county seat of the southernmost of Taiwan's 19 counties. With a population of over 900,000, Pingtung is a bustling marketing and industrial center. Pingtung County is one of Taiwan's major zones of agricultural production, yielding rice and other produce enjoyed throughout the island. Pingtung has a justified reputation as a lush and prosperous region. The history of National Pingtung University of Education extends back to the Japanese colonial period, when it was initiated as a facility to provide rudimentary teacher training. After Taiwan's restoration to the Republic of China in 1945, NPUE continued to function as a training facility and it was later promoted from a 5-year junior college to a 4-year provisional teachers college. In 1991, the college came under the jurisdiction of the national government, and its name was changed to reflect the new status within the constellation of normal colleges and universities in Taiwan. ＊National Hualien University of Education was founded on October 27, 1947. The campus was originally located at the foot of Mt. Hua Kang in Hualien city, and was moved to its present site in north Hualien in 1960 after suffering typhoon damage. In July 1964, the college was reformed as a five-year vocational college for training elementary school teachers. On July 1, 1987, the college was officially institutionalized into a provincial teachers' college. In 1991, the Ministry of Education promoted NHLTC to national college status. The college was promoted as National Hualien University of Education in 2005. The campus occupies about 13 hectares in the northern suburbs of Hualien city. Far from the hustle and bustle of the west coast cities of Taiwan, Hualien is a small and pleasant city with abundant natural beauty. Hualien indeed lives up to its name, a 'land of lotuses'. It is an excellent location for study; the peace and tranquility of Hualien's natural surroundings inspire wonder and contemplation, along with harmony in human relations. The school logo combines the Teaching Bell and the Lotus. The bell represents the spirit of education, and the lotus or lian, symbolizing peace and wisdom, is also the second syllable of the name Hualien. (C) Grades and Academic Standards The college's grading system is based on a 100-point scale. For undergraduates, the minimum passing grade is 60; for graduate students, it is 70. No credits are earned if a student receives a failing grade in a course. At least 128 course credits are required in order to earn a bachelor's degree. Master's and Doctoral degrees require the completion of thirty-two credits and eighteen credits respectively.
