Clothes Recycling
Ever wondered what these big street-side boxes were? If you thought they could be some sort of Goodwill box, you’re not far off! These boxes are used to collect old clothes - clothes only – no appliances or other goods. They are sponsored by groups that offer employment to physically challenged people, who are hired to collect, sort through and offer the clothes for re-sale.
In order to get the right to put out such a collection box groups have to apply to the city’s Social Affairs bureau, TPE, TCH, KKH. Applications are accepted every three years.
There’s no one overarching group; individual groups will put out boxes. The Street-side collection box program has been established for about 20 years. You’ll find these island-wide, except in Taichung, where they have their own special program.
