Chinese Classes

China Language Institute began operations in 1979, providing intensive instruction in Mandarin, Taiwanese, English and Japanese language and literature.
Fully qualified and professionally-trained teaching staff carefully selected from our own teacher training program.

A few words from the director:
With over 40 years of language teaching experience behind me, I have discovered that while not one single textbook can suit all students, qualified and experienced teachers can compensate for these deficiencies in teaching materials.
Only with active and lively instruction and sufficient flexibility to respond to the varying needs of different students can the highest level of teaching effectiveness be achieved in other words, in language instruction, the importance of teachers’ qualifications is far greater than the importance of textbooks.
Therefore, all of our teachers have specialized training in the teaching of Chinese to foreign students. They receive 40 hours of training over a three-month period. I personally conduct three training sessions.
During the 40 hours, they not only build up an ability to use basic teaching techniques, but also develop an accurate concept of what is involved in all phases of language teaching for the latter is the most important for being a successful language teacher.

＊Teaching Materials
The teaching materials which we are currently using can be divided into two categories. In the first category are materials written in Romanization. In the second category are textbooks written in Chinese characters with Mandarin phonetic symbols alongside.
Our aim here in using romanized texts is to minimize the difficulties inherent in study of an ideographic language such as Chinese by students whose native languages rely on romanized phonetic writing.
We also offer instruction with materials using Mandarin phonetic symbols as some students; particularly those interested in developing more than speaking skills, find the subsequent transition from these symbols to use of Chinese Characters in reading and writing smoother and less difficult.

Materials used for each student are selected following consultation with the student concerning his or her language acquisition goals. Materials are important, however we maintain that it is the skill and ability of the teacher which are of greatest importance to a motivated language learner.
