Owls English Language School

Teaching Position – English Language Arts Teacher, 1st – 6th grade

Overview:
Owls English Language School (OELS) is an English language development school. It provides an academic English language program to elementary school students, grades one to six. Our students come from Taipei City Xingyi District’s Bo Ai Elementary School. Many of our students have functional English language proficiency, and many of our students come from families whose parents are reasonably fluent in English. OELS uses HMH Journeys, an internationally renowned language arts curriculum to teach English reading, writing, listening and speaking to its students. The goals of this program are English literacy, as well as proficiency in the practical use of English. OELS instruction adheres to the principles and objectives of the Common Core State Standards as adopted by United States schools in 2010.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements:
• Teaching Credential (Authorization to teach in a public school) and/or requisite experience in the field of teaching English as a foreign language
• Newly arriving teachers to Taiwan must have an FBI background check with an apostille.
• If applicant teacher has been teaching in Taiwan the FBI background check is not needed.

• Bachelor of Arts Degree
• Native English Speaker
• Teaching experience in a regular classroom setting
• Experience & knowledge, teaching English as a second language, as well as familiarity with language arts instruction & curricula as practiced in the United States







Further details and specifics on the teaching assignment and necessary qualifications:

• Hours of employment: 1:30pm – 7:30pm, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday (Tuesdays are non-instructional days for the English program. However, we meet four hours each Tuesday for staff development and planning.)
• Class size ranges from eight to twelve students
• Each class is 75 minutes in length.
• Some classes include more than one grade level. For example, the OELS 3rd grade English class may combine 3rd and 4th grade Bo Ai Elementary School students.
• OELS teachers must have strong skills in classroom management and must have adequate knowledge and experience working with a variety of student behaviors.
• OELS teachers must know how to differentiate instruction to meet the differing skill levels and learning styles of their students.
• Teachers must know how to do long range and short range lesson planning in the four strands of language arts instruction (reading, writing, listening & speaking).
• OELS teachers must demonstrate competency in administrative tasks such as organization of materials, filing, testing and documentation of results.
• OELS teachers create a healthy and positive classroom environment that is inviting and stimulating to students.
• OELS teachers develop meaningful relationships with students that encourage creativity, a desire to learn and a willingness to work hard.
• OELS teachers work well with their peers and their supervisors.
