Our classes are scheduled between 8:10-12:00AM and 1:10-4:00PM. Each student's daily schedule typically consists of four fifty-minute classes in the following proportions: (1) Individual class 單班課 The Individual class is an intensive one-on-one language class where each student can focus on his/her individual needs. (2) Group classes 合班課 Each group class is made up of 2-4 students matched according to linguistic level. Classes are generally separated into two categories: spoken language classes (會話課) and reading and discussion classes (選讀討論課). As the latter term implies, even in reading classes, the principal classroom activity is speech. Similarly, while the emphasis in (會話課) is very much on oral/aural training, all texts from which students work are in Chinese characters. All spoken language materials, as well as most reading materials, are also available in digitally recorded format in the language laboratory, and students are expected to make extensive use of these taped materials in preparation for their classes. Classes move at an intense pace, and students are expected to come to class well-prepared and ready to learn. For more detailed information on ICLP's teaching methods and class processes, please see our PROGRAM section.

Ⅰ. Origin In order to accommodate foreigners’ needs for learning the Chinese language, the Language Center of NCU started the operation of Chinese Language Program in 2001 and has already achieved success in the relevant filed. The duty of the Chinese Language Program is to teach foreigners Chinese language and to help them get acquainted with the essence of the Chinese language and culture. Ⅱ. Features In addition to the training of basic language skills, the Chinese language courses offered in our center also contain the instruction of Chinese culture as well as practical lessons such as business Chinese and journalistic Chinese. All the courses could be classified into four categories i.e. basic Chinese courses, practical Chinese courses, cultural Chinese courses, and other Chinese-related-language courses, and all of which are set primarily to help students develop the ability to converse fluently in Chinese and further to help them get acquaint with Chinese culture and society. Even thought all the courses have shared features, the framework of each course will vary in accordance with the objective of the course, and it is believed that with the course carried out in small classes, the interaction between teachers and students will thus be enhanced. Except for the classroom-based courses, regular accomplishment performances and outside activities will be held as well to help students to integrate what they have learned from the class into authentic situations. Ⅲ. Faculty & Resources In order to provide high quality teaching, all the Chinese language teachers in our center have MA degrees (or above) in the relevant academic fields. Except for being professional at " Teaching Chinese as a Second Language", most of the teachers have overseas teaching experience. In addition to the advantages in faculty, our center also provides comprehensive audio-video equipments accessible for teachers to prepare for the class as well as for students to review their study after the class. Currently, the Language Center is working on the construction of more multimedia classrooms and has aimed to make the collection of the Chinese language books more abundant to fulfill the ideal of 'Autonomy Learning'. Ⅳ.Long-term Objectives One of the most important objectives that the Chinese Language Program aims to achieve is to become an authority for the Chinese language education. With the population of foreigners in Taiwan increasing more and more rapidly, we hope to offer foreigners an ideal environment for learning the Chinese language. The Chinese Language Program will also devote to the research in the fields of Chinese language teaching and learning, based on which we hope to keep upgrading our academic recourses while heading toward the trend of internalization.

The improvement courses focus on improving the proficiency in daily conversation and reading. Upon arriving at the CLC, placement evaluations are given to each student in order to determine his or her appropriate class level. We teach traditional characters and zhu-yin (bo po mo fo) pronunciation system. A minimum of three students is required to open a class. All courses at the CLC are offered on a non-credit basis. Thus, the CLC does not confer diplomas. Classes are scheduled between 9 to 12 A .M. and 2 to 5 P.M. In response to increasing interest in Chinese language and culture throughout the world, National Cheng Kung University established the Chinese Language Center (CLC) in the fall of 1982 to provide the best possible opportunity for those interested in learning Mandarin Chinese and studying various aspects of Chinese culture. The Chinese Language Center is equipped with the most up to date facilities, including language laboratories, computers and internet access, in order to ensure learning is rapid and enjoyable. Since the completion of the new Xiu Qi Building in June 2000, the Language Center has been able to offer an environment which is clearly the best in Taiwan for Chinese language learning. The Chinese Language Center offers courses for students at beginner, basic, intermediate and advanced levels of proficiency. The center's teachers are highly experienced, conscientious and responsible. Most have been chosen from the ranks of the most outstanding students of the NCKU College of Liberal Arts, College of Management and College of Social Sciences after undergoing a rigorous selection and training process. Courses are offered in two categories, the first being Chinese language, and the second being other aspects of Chinese culture. The Center aims to strengthen international friendship through the promotion of cultural exchange, and to enable overseas students interested in Chinese Studies to use it as a stepping stone toward advanced studies in the departments of the College of Liberal Arts or other colleges. Educational Style: Individual classes consist of one Chinese teacher and one student. The student is free at any time to raise questions or issues for discussion. Similarly, the teachers are able to adjust their teaching methods according to the students' needs. Small group classes, apart from the usual training in speaking, listening, reading and writing, also include theme-based discussions, in which the teacher leads students in expressing their ideas and opinions about various issues. Classes are designed to be lively and interactive. These two kinds of classes are offered for students to choose from according to their own preferred learning style. Apart from this, the CLC also offers free optional courses in relevant subjects, from which students may choose to supplement their standard 10 hours of class. Naturally, language study requires persistence over a sustained period of time in order to make progress. Consequently, apart from the normal winter, spring, summer and fall semesters, the CLC also offers intensive one-month four-hour-per-day courses during the summer and winter vacations. The aim in conducting these courses is to provide overseas students with more choice and flexibility, in order to make best use of their available time. In order to ensure that students are allocated to a suitable small class, the CLC conducts placement tests when students arrive at the center. Tests are also conducted at the completion of each student's studies, in order to provide an objective record of their achievements over the course of their studies.
